A minstrel called Blondel is said to have gone looking for the captured king of England by traveling from castle to castle singing the first half of a song only the two of them knew, until a voice from a window sang the second half back.

The story of Blondell
The trouble with the story is that the king's whereabouts were never a secret. He was captured returning from crusade, held by the emperor, and the negotiations over his ransom were public, protracted and conducted through official channels; there was no mystery to solve. The tale first appears in a French chronicle written decades later, was retold with increasing detail through the following centuries, and was made permanent by a very successful opera and then by the Victorians, who loved it. There was a real trouvère of that name who wrote songs that survive, and there is no evidence he ever went anywhere near a castle window. It remains the version most people know, which is a good illustration of how a story outcompetes a fact.
Meaning
fair-haired
From the Old French word for fair or blond hair, with a diminutive ending, used first as a nickname and then as a surname. The reading is not in dispute. As with all nickname surnames, the description applied to one ancestor and then descended to people it did not fit, so it says nothing about anybody who now carries it.
How the name formed
- An Old French nickname about fair hair
- A twelfth-century trouvere and a later legend
- A surname across France and England
- Blondell as an American first name for both sexes
Related forms: Blondel
Pronouncing Blondell
blon-DELL
Two syllables with the stress at the back, following the French diminutive ending. Some American families put it on the front instead, and both are heard; the back stress is the older and more French of the two.

Fashion outlook
Blondell sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The back stress gives it a strong and rather elegant shape.
- It works on the register for either child, which the record confirms.
- It carries a genuinely famous story, even if the story is fiction.
- The word blonde is audible inside it and will be commented on.
- It reads as a surname to many people, which is what it originally was.
- It is firmly of the earlier twentieth century and has had no revival.
