The story of Blaze
Blaise of Sebaste was a bishop and physician who, in the story, saved a child from choking on a fishbone, which is why his feast involves the blessing of throats with crossed candles. His name was common in medieval Europe. Quite separately, English had the word blaze for a flame and for the white mark on a horse's face. American parents began using Blaze as a name in the late twentieth century, for both sexes, and the word is what they were choosing.

a flame; or, through Blaise, lisping
Two roads. The English word blaze descends from Old English blaese, a torch or firebrand. The name Blaise comes from Latin Blasius, generally connected to blaesus, lisping or stammering. Modern American use draws almost entirely on the word, but the saint's name is the older of the two.

The Elita test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Blaze's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Elita climbed just as high around 1919, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Elita's path sketches the road Blaze is walking now.

The trade-off
- The meaning is a single vivid image that any child can picture.
- Five letters and one syllable: fast to write and impossible to mispronounce.
- It has a real saint behind it as well as a word, which gives it more history than most word-names.
- Blaise is the older spelling and the two get written for each other.
- It is used for both sexes, so paperwork does not always guess right.
- A one-syllable word-name gives nothing to shorten and no change of register.
