Where it comes from

The story of Bibiana

Saint Bibiana, or Viviana, is a Roman martyr of the fourth century whose church on the Esquiline was rebuilt by Bernini in 1626 — his first architectural commission. The confusion of her two names is not an error but a faithful record of how Latin was being spoken: the classical distinction between the consonants b and v had collapsed across much of the Empire by the third century, and Spanish never restored it. Modern Spanish speakers learn the two letters as spellings, not as sounds. Bibiana is the standard Spanish and Italian form and reached America with Mexican and Italian families; the figures peak in 1996.

Meaning

Latin "alive, lively"

From Latin vivus, alive, through the name Viviana. Spanish and Late Latin merged the sounds written b and v into a single consonant, so Bibiana and Viviana are one name with two spellings. The medieval Latin tag beati Hispani quibus vivere bibere est — blessed the Spaniards, for whom to live is to drink — is a grammarians' joke about exactly this merger.

Four syllables, stress on the third, with pure Spanish vowels. In Spanish the b is a soft sound made without fully closing the lips, so it sits between English b and v.
