The story of Bibi
Bībī spread with Persian as a court language across the Mughal empire and Central Asia, and in South Asia it became so standard a suffix for Muslim women's names that it functions almost as a marker. It is also used alone as a given name. Quite separately, Bibi is a familiar form in French and in Latin American Spanish, and in Swahili bibi means a grandmother or a lady. The American record shows the name thinly through the twentieth century and rising recently, with a peak in 2018 — late enough that the current fashion for short doubled names, alongside Coco, Lulu and Mimi, is part of it.

Lady, madam
Persian and Urdu bībī is a respectful term for a woman of standing, used across South Asia and Central Asia and often appended to a name — Fatima Bibi, Zainab Bibi. Its own origin is not fully settled; a Persian formation is generally assumed. Separately, Bibi functions as a nursery reduplication in French, Spanish and English for names beginning with B or containing a b sound, and carries no meaning in that use.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Bibi's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Richa climbed just as high around 1998, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Richa's path sketches the road Bibi is walking now.
