Where it comes from

The story of Richa

The Rigveda, composed well over three thousand years ago and handed down by memory long before it was written, takes its name from ṛc, a verse of praise; when ṛc stands before veda, 'knowledge', Sanskrit sound rules turn it into ṛg, and English writes the result as Rig-. Richa is the same word used as a girl's name. Sanskrit treats r as a vowel as well as a consonant — the sound right after the k in Krishna, and the whole first sound of ṛc — and English, which has no such vowel, writes it ri. The name reached the United States with Indian families in the late twentieth century.

Fashion outlook

Richa sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A clear, documented meaning tied to the oldest Indian scripture.
  • Short and easy to spell.
  • Used across several Indian languages, so it travels well within Indian families.
What to consider
  • English readers may say it RICH-uh and hear the word rich in it; a friendly correction settles the pronunciation.
  • It will be new to most American classmates, which some families welcome.
