Where it comes from

The story of Betti

The name had a strange decade in American culture. A cartoon character drawn in the early thirties, with a round head and a small voice, became one of the most recognizable figures in the country — and the singer whose voice and style the animators had copied sued, arguing the character was built out of her act. She lost, on the grounds that she had not originated the style either. The character outlived the case by ninety years and the singer is remembered mostly because of it, which is a hard outcome and a fair summary of how the early animation business worked.

My God is an oath

The name descends from Elizabeth, whose Hebrew original joins the divine name to a word about oaths or abundance; the second half has been argued over for a long time. The short form carries the meaning at a distance and the spelling adds nothing.

Fashion outlook

Betti sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short, warm and impossible to mispronounce.
  • A formal name of great standing sits behind it.
  • The spelling is distinctive while the name is completely familiar.
What to consider
  • Betty and Bettie are both commoner and hers will be written as one of them.
  • It reads as a nickname, so a long form will be assumed.
  • The name is strongly associated with one American generation.
