Our story of Bessie
Bessie Smith sold records in numbers that kept a label solvent, filled tents across the south, and toured in a private railroad car she had bought outright, which solved the problem of where a Black touring company could sleep in states that would not accommodate them. Seventy-two feet long, two stories, room for the whole troupe. She was a formidable businesswoman and an even more formidable singer, with a voice that carried to the back of a tent without amplification. She died after a car crash in Mississippi, and the story that a whites-only hospital refused her is a persistent one that her biographer investigated and found to be untrue.

It descends from Elizabeth, a Hebrew name whose sense is documented. The record holds this short form on its own and does not explain its use for both sexes.

Fashion outlook
Bessie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is warm and instantly understood, which very few names manage on a first hearing.
- Bess comes off it as a short form and has centuries of use behind it.
- It is recorded for boys and for girls, so it does not force a reading on anyone.
- It reads as a short form to some people, so formal settings will ask what it stands for.
- In America it reads as belonging to a much older generation, which is either the appeal or the obstacle.
- It is also a traditional name for a cow, which rural families will mention.
