The story of Beckett
Thomas Becket was murdered in Canterbury Cathedral in 1170 after Henry II's exasperated question, and his shrine became the greatest pilgrimage site in England until 1538. Samuel Beckett is the other famous bearer. The surname entered American given-name use in the 2000s for both sexes; feminine Beckett is in current use.
Meaningscholars disagree
beehive; stream; beak
Three routes. From the Old English beo, 'bee', and cot, 'shelter' — a beehive or bee-keeper's hut. From bece, 'stream', with a diminutive. Or from a Norman byname bec, 'beak', for a prominent nose. All are documented and none is settled.

The Latonja test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Beckett's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Latonja climbed just as high around 1969, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Latonja's path sketches the road Beckett is walking now.
Beckett sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
