It belongs with Charity, Mercy, Prudence and Temperance to the English habit of naming a child for a quality, and its word has a long French and Latin history.

Where it comes from

The story of Beauty

Abstract-quality names entered English with the Reformation and never entirely left. The famous set is moral — Faith, Hope, Charity, Prudence, Patience, Mercy — but a second and less discussed group names qualities that are not virtues at all: Beauty, Fortune, Comfort, Increase. American records carry all of these, concentrated in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Beauty is unusual among them for still being in use, in small numbers, and for being the only one where the quality named is entirely outside the bearer's control. It has revived slightly in recent decades alongside Precious and Diamond.

Meaning

beauty; the quality of being beautiful

Latin bellus, 'pretty, handsome, fine', gave Old French bel and beau and the noun beaute, which English borrowed in the fourteenth century. Bellus is itself thought to be a diminutive of bonus, 'good' — so beauty and good are, at some distance, the same word. The abstract noun replaced the native English wlite, which did not survive. The derivation is settled at every step.

Beauty sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2018, with 28 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Beauty went to 19 girls in 2025, but Beautii is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 25, which makes it the 935th most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,181 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 64,291 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 84,593 for Beauty itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It never needs to be spelled, because every English speaker already writes it.
  • Bea and Beau are both usable short forms with real independent histories.
  • The Latin route from bellus to beauty is a genuinely good story.
What to consider
  • It names a quality the bearer did not choose and cannot control, which some adults find heavy.
  • As an everyday noun it appears constantly in sentences unrelated to the bearer.
  • Its American curve is turn-of-the-century, which places a bearer's generation.
