Where it comes from

The story of Beauregard

French estates were named for their outlook — Beauregard, Bellevue, Belvedere all say the same thing — and families took the names. French settlement in Louisiana brought Beauregard to America, where a nineteenth-century Confederate general of that surname made it widely known in the South. Its use as a given name belongs chiefly to Louisiana and the Gulf, and it was in real American use around 1900.

Meaning

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled and pleasant meaning that needs no research to explain.
  • Beau is a complete short form that is short, current and very widely used.
  • Genuine turn-of-the-century American use behind it.
What to consider
  • The Confederate general is the strongest American association and it is not a neutral one.
  • Ten letters and three syllables is a great deal for early handwriting.
  • The French pronunciation drops the final d, which American usage does not.
