Bayli

Bayli is a respelling of Bailey, and Bailey is two different jobs wearing one spelling. It is the outer wall of a castle, and it is the officer who ran a district for a lord. The most famous survival of the first is a criminal court in London that everybody calls by the name of a wall that was pulled down centuries ago.

The story of Bayli
The Central Criminal Court in London stands on a street that ran along the outer wall of the old city, and the street was called the Old Bailey because that is what the wall was. The wall went, the street kept the name, the court that was built there took the street's name, and now the two words mean a courtroom to hundreds of millions of people who have never thought about a castle. It is a good example of what happens to English words about buildings: the building goes, the word stays, and within a few generations nobody can see the thing it was originally describing.

Not established
The surname has two sources and most families cannot say which is theirs. One is the office of bailiff, from a Latin word about carrying a burden and so about holding responsibility; the other is the bailey, the enclosed courtyard between a castle's outer wall and its keep. A man might be named for the job or for living beside the wall, and the spellings are identical either way. This form drops the final vowel pair and writes a bare i instead, which is an American habit of the last few decades.
How the name formed
- a Latin word about carrying responsibility gives bailiff
- a separate word gives the bailey of a castle
- both produce the English surname Bailey
- the surname becomes an American first name for daughters
- Bayli appears among its respellings in the 1980s

Fashion outlook
Bayli sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

- The bare final i dates a certificate closely to the last decades of the century.
- The two possible origins pull in different directions and neither can be given as the meaning.
