Where it comes from

The story of Barnard

One Barnard ran a college and spent years arguing that it should admit women; the institution declined, and after his death a separate women's college was founded in New York and named for him, which is why the name is now carried by an undergraduate college with a complicated relationship to the university next door. Another Barnard was an astronomer who began as a photographer's assistant and taught himself the sky, and who found a small red star moving faster across it than any other — so fast that its position shifts visibly in a human lifetime. It is still called Barnard's Star, it is one of the closest to the sun, and it moves a full moon's width every century and a half.

Meaning

Bear brave, bear strong

The Germanic compound joins the word for a bear to one meaning brave or hardy. Names built on animals were ordinary in Germanic naming and this one is among the most common; the meaning has never been in dispute.

Barnard sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1926, with 22 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Barnard sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled, vivid and easy to explain to a child.
  • It has native forms in every western European language.
  • The stress at the front distinguishes it from the more common spelling.
What to consider
  • Bernard is the standard spelling and his will be corrected to it.
  • For many Americans the name belongs to a college before it belongs to a person.
  • The name is closely tied to an older generation and has not yet come back.
