The same Greek root traveled further than the name did. Barbaros gave Latin barbarus, and Latin gave the Arabs' western neighbors the label Berber, and the coast of North Africa became the Barbary Coast. The horses bred there were Barbs, one of the founding strains of the modern thoroughbred, and the word is still used of them. So the name and the horse share an ancestor: both are Europeans calling somebody else foreign. Barb the name is far newer than any of that. It appears in American records in the twentieth century, at the height of Barbara's own run, when a great many families began entering the spoken form rather than the formal one.
