A bailey is the outer wall of a castle and the ground inside it, which is where the motte-and-bailey gets its name. A bailiff is an officer. The two words look related and the surname Bailey could come from either, and after eight hundred years there is no way to tell which family carried which.

Where it comes from

The story of Baleigh

The motte-and-bailey is the standard Norman fortification and it is why the word is in English at all. A motte is an artificial mound with a tower on top; the bailey is the enclosed yard below it, ringed by a palisade and ditch, holding the hall, stables and workshops. Thousands were built across England after 1066, quickly and in timber, and their earthworks survive all over the country. The Old Bailey in London takes its name from a stretch of the city wall. The bailiff is a different word with a different Latin source, meaning a carrier or porter and then a person entrusted with a charge, and it gave both the officer and the modern bailiwick. English absorbed both and let them look alike, which is one reason the surname's origin is unrecoverable.

Old French bailli, a bailiff, or baile, an enclosure

The surname Bailey has at least two sources: Old French bailli, an officer or steward, from Latin bajulus; and baile, the outer wall or courtyard of a castle, from a separate root. There is also an English place name Bailey in Lancashire. All three are current in the surname and none can be identified in a given family. Baleigh is a modern American respelling using the -eigh digraph. It peaks in 1999.
