Where it comes from

The story of Baldomero

Germanic name elements were a fixed and rather small stock, and bald and mari were two of the most used. Bald is the ancestor of English bold and turns up at both ends of a name: Baldwin is bold friend, Baldric is bold ruler, Archibald is genuinely bold, Theobald is bold people. Mari, famous, is at the end of Waldemar, Dietmar and Ingemar. The compound went into Spain with the Visigoths, who ruled the peninsula for three centuries and left a stock of Germanic names that Spanish has kept ever since — Alfonso, Fernando, Rodrigo, Gonzalo and Baldomero are all of them. The name's best-known bearer was a nineteenth-century Spanish general who twice ran the country.

Meaning

boldly famous

Germanic bald, bold or brave, with mari, famous. Both elements are among the commonest in Germanic naming: mari also ends Waldemar and Dietmar, and bald opens Baldwin and ends Archibald. Baldomero is the Spanish form.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Germanic meaning with both elements documented and both still visible in English.
  • Three short forms, two of which are full names elsewhere.
  • It carries the Visigothic layer of Spanish naming, which few names show as clearly.
What to consider
  • Four syllables is long and it will be shortened by others immediately.
  • In English the first syllable reads as the word for hairless, which it is not.
  • It is strongly represented among older generations in Spain and Mexico.
