Aziel
Masculine · Hebrew roots · “God is my strength”
Aziel is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 8,721 boys against 75 girls since 1880.
Aziel belongs to a Levite musician listed in the Book of Chronicles, one of the men set to play harps when the ark was brought into Jerusalem — a name attached, from its first appearance, to music. In English it comes out in three easy syllables, AY-zee-el, with the same -el ending that closes Daniel, Gabriel and Uriel. It is a very old name having a very new moment in American nurseries.

The story of Aziel
The name is Hebrew and biblical: Aziel appears in 1 Chronicles 15 among the Levites appointed to make music before the ark, and the same man is called by the fuller form Jaaziel a few verses earlier. Unlike Daniel or Gabriel, it stayed obscure for centuries, carried mainly by readers of Chronicles rather than by churches or kings. Its arrival in American records is recent and its strongest footing is in Texas, California and Arizona, where the closely related Spanish form Azael has long been in use. Almost everyone who has the name in the United States today is a child.

Pronouncing Aziel
AY-zee-el
Three syllables with stress on the first is the usual American reading. Spanish-speaking families often say ah-see-EL or use the form Azael, ah-sah-EL, with the stress at the end; Hebrew places it near ah-zee-EL. Worth deciding which you want, since both are correct in their own setting.

The Marty test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Aziel's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Marty climbed just as high around 1962, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Marty's path sketches the road Aziel is walking now.

The trade-off
- Spelled the way it sounds for most English speakers, and short enough to write on a name tag by kindergarten.
- A documented scriptural record going back to the Hebrew Bible, where Aziel is named among the Levite musicians.
- Sits naturally in both English and Spanish, with Azael as an established Spanish-language counterpart.
- The -el ending is already familiar from Daniel, Gabriel and Uriel, so it rarely needs explaining twice.
- Rare enough that a child is unlikely to share it with a classmate.
- It lands close to several other names — Azael, Azriel, Asiel, Uriel — and you should expect a lifetime of gentle corrections, plus the occasional mishearing as Azazel or Azrael, both of which belong to darker traditions.
- The stress is genuinely unfixed between English and Spanish speakers. In a bilingual family the name may be said two different ways at two different dinner tables, which is workable but worth settling early.
- Despite the ancient root, it has almost no adult history in the United States: nearly everyone carrying it is still a young child, so there is no grown-up template for how it wears.
