Martin of Tours was a fourth-century Roman soldier who became bishop of Tours, and his cult was among the largest in Europe; Martinmas on 11 November was a major date in the agricultural year. The name spread everywhere, and English used it steadily. Marty was registered as a legal name in American records from the 1930s and peaked in the mid-1950s.
