Where each name comes from
Aziel
God is my strength
Hebrew עֲזִיאֵל, built from a root meaning strength or refuge plus El, "God". Rendered in English translations and reference works as "God is my strength" or "God has strengthened".
Yaʿaziʾel (Hebrew) → Jaaziel → ʿAziʾel → Aziel
How it traveled
The name is Hebrew and biblical: Aziel appears in 1 Chronicles 15 among the Levites appointed to make music before the ark, and the same man is called by the fuller form Jaaziel a few verses earlier. Unlike Daniel or Gabriel, it stayed obscure for centuries, carried mainly by readers of Chronicles rather than by churches or kings.
Peter
a rock
Greek, and the sense is not in dispute. The name is a translation of an Aramaic nickname rather than a borrowing of it, which is unusual: most names cross languages by sound rather than by meaning.
Kephas → Petros → Peter
How it traveled
A seabird may be named after him. Storm petrels are small ocean birds that feed by fluttering just above the surface with their feet pattering on the water, so that they appear to be walking on it, and the usual explanation of the name is that sailors called them little Peters after the gospel account.

Out loud, and in short
Aziel
AY-zee-el
Three syllables with stress on the first is the usual American reading. Spanish-speaking families often say ah-see-EL or use the form Azael, ah-sah-EL, with the stress at the end; Hebrew places it near ah-zee-EL. Worth deciding which you want, since both are correct in their own setting.
- Azi — The most natural short form in English; informal, and used by family more than in writing.
- Az — A one-syllable clip, mostly informal and heard among friends and teammates.
- Zee — Drawn from the middle of the name; informal, and also stands alone as a nickname for many Z-names.
- Ziel — Less common; used within families rather than as an everyday call name.
Peter
PEE-tur
Two syllables with the stress at the front. The spelling is entirely unambiguous and the name is never mispronounced in English.
- Pete — The dominant short form and completely established on its own.
- Petey — An affectionate ending; warm and firmly of childhood.

The trade-offs, name by name
Aziel
Strengths
- Spelled the way it sounds for most English speakers, and short enough to write on a name tag by kindergarten.
- A documented scriptural record going back to the Hebrew Bible, where Aziel is named among the Levite musicians.
- Sits naturally in both English and Spanish, with Azael as an established Spanish-language counterpart.
To consider
- It lands close to several other names — Azael, Azriel, Asiel, Uriel — and you should expect a lifetime of gentle corrections, plus the occasional mishearing as Azazel or Azrael, both of which belong to darker traditions.
- The stress is genuinely unfixed between English and Spanish speakers. In a bilingual family the name may be said two different ways at two different dinner tables, which is workable but worth settling early.
- Despite the ancient root, it has almost no adult history in the United States: nearly everyone carrying it is still a young child, so there is no grown-up template for how it wears.
Peter
Strengths
- It is recognized in every European language with minimal change.
- The meaning is concrete, solid and easy to explain to a child.
- It has been in continuous use for as long as records exist.
To consider
- Its peak was very early and the name carries some of that age.
- Pete is common enough that the full form may rarely be used.
- The record holds girls as well, and the girl is much the smaller side.
