Where it comes from

Our story of Ayvah

Ours, offered as ours. What is striking about Ava is how much use it has had on how little history. A ninth-century Frankish saint carried a name recorded as Ava; a twentieth-century American film star made the sound famous; and after 2000 it rose almost everywhere in the English-speaking world. Ayvah is what happens next: the sound becomes so common that families start respelling it to get some of themselves back into it. The y and the h do exactly that and nothing else, which is more honest than most respellings manage.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Ava's origin is not established. A Germanic root has been proposed, and a shortening of longer names beginning Av- is also offered; a connection to the Latin avis, a bird, is popular and unsupported. The Ayvah spelling adds nothing to the question.

Ayvah sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2019, with 150 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

#831
counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Ayvah went to 45 girls in 2025, but Ayva and Aiva are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 129, which makes it the 831st most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,558 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 12,459 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 35,717 for Ayvah itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Read correctly on sight by every English speaker.
  • Five letters and two syllables, quick to write.
  • The spelling is distinctive where the sound is not.
What to consider
  • Ava is enormously more common and will be written for her on nearly every form.
  • The sound is among the most-used of its generation, so a classroom may hold more than one.
  • There is no documented meaning for Ava itself, let alone for this spelling.
