Where it comes from

The story of Aysha

Aisha bint Abi Bakr was the Prophet's wife and one of the most important early transmitters of hadith — over two thousand are attributed to her, and she was consulted on law and practice for decades after his death. The name is among the most-used in the Muslim world and is in current American use.

Meaning

living, alive

From the Arabic aisha, 'living' or 'she who lives', from a root about life. The word is ordinary Arabic and the meaning undisputed. The Hebrew chavah, giving Eve, has the same sense by a separate route, which is a coincidence of meaning rather than of origin.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The living meaning is transparent, undisputed and about as good as meanings get.
  • One of the most consequential figures in early Islamic scholarship carries it.
  • It is used across Arabic, Turkish, Persian and West African naming.
What to consider
  • Aisha is the commoner transliteration and several others exist.
  • The initial Arabic consonant has no English equivalent.
  • It reads as specifically Muslim.
