The story of Awa
Islam came into West Africa across the Sahara by trade, and the names arrived with it and were reshaped by Wolof, Fula, Mandinka and Bambara mouths. Hawwa became Awa, Aminata came from Amina, Fatoumata from Fatima. Awa has been among the commonest women's names in Senegal, Mali and the Gambia for generations, ordinary in the way that Mary is ordinary in English. It reached American records with West African families in the last few decades, and its shortness has kept it intact.
Meaning
living one; the mother of the living
Arabic Hawwa, the first woman, from Hebrew Chawwah, which Genesis itself explains as the mother of all living, connecting it to a root meaning to live. West African speech dropped the opening h.

The Waleska test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Awa's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Waleska climbed just as high around 1972, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Waleska's path sketches the road Awa is walking now.
Awa sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Three letters and two open syllables: as easy as a name can be in any language.
- It is the same name as Eve, which makes it legible in almost every culture.
- It is one of the commonest names in West Africa, so it arrives with a large community.
- A very short name gives a child no short form and no change of register.
- Ava is the far commoner spelling in American English and will be written instead.
- The connection to Eve is invisible to English speakers unless it is explained.
