Avery and Aubrey are cousins, and both are about elves. Avery descends from Alfred — ælf plus rǣd, elf-counsel — or from the same Alberich that gave Aubrey, so a family choosing Avri is at two removes from a name that meant advice given by elves.

Where it comes from

The story of Avri

Elves in early Germanic belief were powerful and morally ambiguous, capable of illness and of gifts, and it was worth having them on your side. That is why the element ælf appears in serious names: Ælfrǣd, elf-counsel, borne by the king of Wessex; Ælfwine, elf-friend; Ælfgifu, elf-gift; and on the Continent Alberich, elf-ruler. English lost the word's seriousness by the sixteenth century, when elves became small and decorative, but the names survived with their meanings intact and unnoticed. Avery came back into American use as a surname name and went unisex in the 1990s; the short form Avri peaks in 2015.

Meaningscholars disagree

Germanic "elf-counsel" or "elf-ruler"

Avery is generally traced either to Old English Ælfrǣd, elf-counsel, which also gives Alfred, or to Norman French Alfred and Alberich, elf-ruler, which gives Aubrey. The two lines are hard to separate and both are Germanic. Avri is a modern clipped respelling of Avery; the -i ending is an American shortening device and adds nothing. Avri is separately a Hebrew name, from Avraham.

Avri sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2015, with 55 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Avri went to 14 girls in 2025, but Avry is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 25, which makes it the 935th most-given girls’ name of the year — 6,556 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 64,291 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 114,805 for Avri itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short, two syllables and easy for a child to write.
  • It descends from a name element with a settled and vivid meaning.
  • It reads as current without being difficult to say.
What to consider
  • The first vowel is pronounced two different ways.
  • Avery is far more common and will be substituted.
  • It is often taken for a misspelling of Avery or April.
