The story of Avonlea
Avonlea is the village on Prince Edward Island in the Anne of Green Gables books, published from 1908 onward, and it is fictional — an assembly of real Island places rather than any single one. The books have been continuously in print for well over a century and are read in translation across the world, particularly in Japan, where they have an unusually large following. The name has come into real use in the last few decades, almost entirely because of them.
Meaningscholars disagree
river meadow
Avon comes from a Brittonic word abona, 'river', which is why several English rivers carry it as a name; the -lea ending is Old English leah, a woodland clearing or meadow. Read that way the compound is a river meadow. But Avonlea was coined for a novel rather than found on a map, and whether its author intended those elements is not recorded — the name may simply have been made to sound like a real place, which it does extremely well.

Three syllables, stress on the first. The Avon at the front is said as the English river is said, with a short a; AY-von, with a long a, is the American cosmetics company and is a different sound.

The Marshall test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Avonlea's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Marshall climbed just as high around 1950, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Marshall's path sketches the road Avonlea is walking now.
Avonlea sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

- Three syllables that every English speaker says correctly at first sight once the first vowel is settled.
- A genuinely well-loved literary source rather than an invented sound.
- The first syllable is said two ways in American English and the cosmetics company owns one of them.
- It is a fictional place, so its meaning is designed rather than descended.
- Avonlea, Avonleigh and Avonlee all circulate and none is standard.
