The story of Aviv
The Hebrew Bible names the month of Aviv as the time of the exodus, and the word describes a stage of the barley harvest rather than a position in a calendar. Modern Hebrew revived it as the ordinary word for spring, and Tel Aviv — the hill of spring — carries it. As a personal name it is modern, used for women and men alike in Israel, and part of the twentieth-century preference for plain Hebrew vocabulary as names.
Meaning
spring; ripening barley
From Hebrew aviv, the stage at which grain has formed but is not yet hard; the biblical month of Aviv is the one in which Passover falls, and modern Hebrew uses the word for the season.

The Jaivion test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Aviv's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jaivion climbed just as high around 2009, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jaivion's path sketches the road Aviv is walking now.
Aviv sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A settled meaning of unusual precision — a specific stage of a specific crop.
- Four letters and two syllables, easy to write and to say.
- Avi is a ready short form that is a complete name of its own.
- It is used for women and men in Israel, so paperwork will sometimes guess wrong.
- The stress moves to the front in English, changing the name's shape.
- The v-v pattern is unusual in English and will be misspelled as Aviv, Avev and Avive.
