The story of Avarie
Alberich was a real Germanic name before it was the dwarf of the Nibelung stories, and the Normans brought their version of it to England, where it collapsed into Avery and became a surname. English families carried it for centuries, and American parents moved it to the front of the name in the twentieth. Once it was a first name, the respellings began, as they always do: Averie, Avry, Avarie. The -ie ending here softens the name and gives it a French look it has not actually earned, though the Norman step in its history means the borrowing is less foreign than it seems.
Meaning
elf ruler; elf power
Avery descends from Germanic Alberich, alb, elf, joined to ric, power or rule, through the Norman French form Alveri. The Old English Aelfric is the same two elements in English dress, and both fed the surname.

The Geraldyne test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Avarie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Geraldyne climbed just as high around 1924, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Geraldyne's path sketches the road Avarie is walking now.
Avarie sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It carries a documented Germanic and Norman history, which most modern respellings do not.
- Ava is available as a short form and is already familiar everywhere.
- Three syllables with the stress in front sit well against short surnames.
- Avery is the standard spelling and will be written instead by nearly everyone.
- Avarie is also a French word for damage to a ship or cargo, which French speakers will notice.
- Averie, Avary and Avarie are all in use, so a family's records may not agree with themselves.
