Avant
Masculine · “before”
Vanguard is avant-garde worn down. The French military term for the advance guard came into English in the fifteenth century, lost its middle, and became vanguard; then in the nineteenth century English borrowed the original again, this time for artists. Two words, one phrase, four hundred years apart.

The story of Avant
Avant-garde was a plain military term for the troops who go first, and it was still one when a French socialist writer in the 1820s used it as a metaphor for artists — the people out in front, taking the risks, seeing the ground before anyone else. The metaphor stuck so thoroughly that the military sense disappeared from English entirely and the word now means only the art. Meanwhile the same phrase had already arrived four centuries earlier, been squeezed into one word, and settled down as vanguard, meaning the front of an army or a movement. English has both and almost nobody notices they are the same thing.
Meaning
before, in front
French avant, before or in front, from Latin ab ante. It is an ordinary preposition and adverb in French and appears in a long row of compounds: avant-garde, avant-propos, avantage, which English took as advantage.

The Imari test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Avant's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Imari climbed just as high around 1974, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Imari's path sketches the road Avant is walking now.
Avant sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A settled French meaning that is an everyday word in the language.
- Two syllables with an unmistakable stress.
- Van works as a short form and is a name of its own.
- It is a preposition rather than a noun, which is unusual for a name and will be remarked on.
- The final t is silent in French and sounded in English, so two sayings are in use.
- It is close to Avante and Avanti, both of which are used.
