The story of Autry
The singing cowboy was largely his invention and it dominated a decade of American film: a hero who solved problems with songs as often as with fists, in a fictional west with radios and cars in it. The name went into the records with the films, which is why it appears mostly in the years he was making them. The surname itself came from France by way of the American South, and there are French villages called Autry in the Ardennes and elsewhere, formed from a Gallo-Roman personal name with an estate suffix. That suffix, -acum, is behind an enormous number of French place names and is one of the commonest word-endings on the map of France.

Not established
A surname, most often traced to a French place name — Autry appears in several French communes, from a Gallo-Roman estate name. Some American Autrys descend from Audrey, itself from Old English Aethelthryth. Neither has been established for the given name.

The Burnell test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Autry's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Burnell climbed just as high around 1920, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Burnell's path sketches the road Autry is walking now.
Autry sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
