Austin is Augustine with three syllables worn off. Medieval English speech reduced the saint's name so thoroughly that the friars of his order were called Austin Friars, and the short form became a name and then a surname of its own. Auston is the American respelling.

The story of Auston
Two Augustines mattered: the bishop of Hippo, whose writing shaped western Christianity, and the monk sent to convert the English in 597, who became the first archbishop of Canterbury. Both kept the name in use. English contracted it early, and Austin became a surname and a Texan city named after a colonist. It became a very popular American first name in the nineteen-nineties, and the respellings, Auston, Austyn and Awstin, followed.
Meaning
venerable; worthy of honor
Latin Augustinus, from augustus, majestic or venerable, which was a title given to Roman emperors and gave August its name. English contracted Augustine to Austin in ordinary speech by the thirteenth century.

The Kieth test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Auston's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Kieth climbed just as high around 1964, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Kieth's path sketches the road Auston is walking now.
Auston sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
