The story of Aundre
Andrew is the first disciple called in John's gospel, which is why he is the Protoclete, the first-called, in the eastern churches. The tradition that he was crucified on a diagonal cross is late and probably medieval, but it gave Scotland its national symbol: relics attributed to him were said to have reached Fife, the saltire became the royal emblem, and the story of a white cross appearing against a blue sky before a battle against the Angles was attached to it. He is also the patron of Greece, Russia and Romania, which makes him one of the most widely claimed saints in Christendom. The name's own meaning is manly, from the ordinary Greek word for a man, and it was a Greek name borne by a Galilean fisherman, which tells you something about the region.
