Audrie
Feminine · “noble strength”
Audrie is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 4,103 girls against 5 boys since 1880.
Audrey began as Aetheldreda, a seventh-century abbess of Ely whose name was far too long for English mouths and was worn down over eight centuries into two syllables. The fairs held on her feast day sold cheap lace called St Audrey's lace, and English contracted that too, into the word tawdry. Audrie is the modern respelling.

The story of Audrie
Aethelthryth founded the abbey at Ely and was venerated there through the Middle Ages, which kept her name alive long after the Old English elements in it had stopped meaning anything to anyone. Ordinary speech shortened it steadily until Audrey was all that remained. The word tawdry comes from the same source, by way of the cheap necklaces sold at her fairs. The name was quiet for centuries and returned in the twentieth, and the respellings, Audrie, Audrey and Audra, followed the return in the usual way.
Meaning
noble strength
Old English aethel, noble, joined to thryth, strength or power. The abbess's name was Aetheldreda in Latin records and Aethelthryth in English ones, and Audrey is what centuries of speech made of it.

The trade-off
- It has one of the best-documented histories of any English name, traceable to a named seventh-century figure.
- The meaning is settled and can be said in two words.
- Two syllables with the stress in front sit well against almost any surname.
- Audrey is the standard spelling by a wide margin and will be written instead.
- Audrie, Audrey and Audree are all said identically, which guarantees written confusion.
- The word tawdry comes from the same saint, which somebody will eventually point out.
