Where it comes from
From Alberic to Aubri
The story of Aubri
Alberic belongs to the same Frankish stock as Alfred and Albert, and one of its bearers is Alberich, the dwarf who guards the hoard in the Nibelungenlied — the German poem Wagner later drew on. Normandy shortened it to Auberi, and Norman settlers carried it to England, where it became a surname as well as a man's name. American parents took the surname back to the front, gave it to daughters, and then began respelling it: Aubrey, Aubree, Aubrie, Aubri. The -i ending is the shortest of them.
Meaning
elf ruler
The Germanic Alberic joins alf, 'elf', to ric, 'power, rule'. In early Germanic belief elves were not small and charming but powerful and dangerous, so the compound is closer to a claim of supernatural authority than to anything decorative. French turned Alberic into Auberi and then Aubri; English took it as Aubrey.
