The story of Atom
Democritus and his school argued in the fifth century BC that matter must be made of particles too small to divide, and they gave those particles a name that says exactly that. Two and a half thousand years later chemists borrowed the word for something similar and then discovered it could be divided after all. The word has kept its name and lost its meaning, which is a rare and rather good thing for a word to do. Its use as a given name is very recent.
Meaning
indivisible, that which cannot be cut
From Greek atomos, uncuttable, coined by Greek philosophers for the smallest possible particle of matter; the word was applied to the chemical atom in the nineteenth century and kept even after the thing was split.

The Ezekial test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Atom's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ezekial climbed just as high around 2000, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ezekial's path sketches the road Atom is walking now.
Atom sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
