The story of Atlantis
The Timaeus and the Critias present Atlantis as a story Solon brought back from Egyptian priests: a great naval power beyond the Pillars of Heracles, which attacked Athens, was defeated, and sank in a day and a night. Plato uses it to argue about ideal states and about pride, and the Critias breaks off unfinished. No Greek writer before him mentions it, and Aristotle, his own student, appears to have regarded it as invented. Its afterlife has been extraordinary. As an American girls' name Atlantis belongs to the 1990s and 2000s and had its best year in 2001, boosted by an animated film of that year.
Meaning
island of Atlas
Greek Atlantis nesos, the island of Atlas, named in Plato for the first king of the place, whom he identifies with the Titan. The Atlantic Ocean carries the same name for the same reason. The name is grammatically a feminine adjective agreeing with nesos, an island, so Atlantis alone is a description rather than a noun.

The Graziella test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Atlantis's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Graziella climbed just as high around 1971, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Graziella's path sketches the road Atlantis is walking now.
