The story of Athina
Athena was the goddess of wisdom, craft and strategic warfare, the patron of Athens, and the owner of the Parthenon; the olive tree she gave the city in her contest with Poseidon is still shown on the Acropolis. Her name survives as the Greek name of the city and as an ordinary Greek women's name, Athina, which has been in continuous use. Greek migration brought it to America, and its modest peak in 1989 belongs to Greek-American families; Athina Onassis, the shipping heiress born in 1985, is the most internationally visible bearer of the modern form.
Meaningnot established
Not established; the goddess and the city share the name
Athena's name has no accepted etymology. It is generally thought to be pre-Greek, taken up from an earlier language of the Aegean along with the goddess herself. Whether the city is named after the goddess or the goddess after the city was already debated in antiquity. Modern Greek Athina is the same name in its current form; the reading wisdom is a description of what the goddess governs, not a translation of her name.

The Monya test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Athina's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Monya climbed just as high around 1966, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Monya's path sketches the road Athina is walking now.
Athina sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
