The aspen is the tree whose leaves shiver in the faintest breeze — English has called it some version of that since before the Norman Conquest. Aspyn is that word written with a y where the e would sit, and it has kept a modest, unbroken place on American birth records ever since it first appeared there.

How old is the name Aspyn?

Aspyn first appears in US birth records in 1992 — 33 years ago. The typical Aspyn is a kid of about 6 — this name's wave is very recent. About 3,900 people named Aspyn are estimated to be alive in the US today.

When was the name Aspyn most popular?

Aspyn peaked in 2022, reaching #812 nationally. Today it ranks #869, 57 places below that high. See the whole 2022 chart.

I

Where it comes from

The story of Aspyn

The English word aspen goes back to Old English æspe, with close relatives across the Germanic languages — German Espe, Swedish asp — all naming the same pale-barked poplar whose leaves turn on their stems in any wind. In the 1880s a silver-mining camp high in the Colorado Rockies took the tree's name, and the town later became far better known than the mine. Aspen as a given name belongs to the modern American practice of naming children after trees, alongside Willow, Juniper and Hazel, and Aspyn is that name with the y substitution that also produced Jaclyn, Kaylyn and Braelyn. Both spellings run together in the record, with Aspen the older and more common of the two.

Meaning

aspen tree

The spelling change to -yn doesn't alter the meaning; the name still points to the trembling-leaved poplar, and to Aspen, Colorado, which was itself named for the tree.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is already familiar to American ears from the tree and from Aspen, Colorado, so people hear it right the first time even when they spell it wrong.
  • Two syllables, stress on the first, no consonant clusters — straightforward for a young child to say and for a teacher to read from a list.
  • Short and complete as it stands; it asks for no nickname and fits any form or name tag without abbreviation.
  • Rare enough that a child carrying it will almost certainly be the only one in the school.
What to consider
  • Aspen is the standard English spelling of the tree, so this version will be corrected and re-corrected for life. It is a one-second fix each time, but it is a lifetime of one-second fixes.
  • The -yn respelling ties the name to a recent stretch of American naming, the way Jaclyn or Kaylyn signal their own decades. That may matter more when the child is fifty than when she is five.
  • Shortened to Aspy it brushes against slang for Asperger's. Since the full name is already short, this is easy to head off simply by not starting the habit.
