Kahlani
Feminine
Kahlani is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 2,213 girls against 7 boys since 1880.
Kahlani lands in the ear as three open syllables with the stress in the middle, and it shares its ending with Leilani and Kalani, names American records have carried for generations. It is a young name here, part of a wave of -lani names that grew through this century, and it still travels mostly in the South. Say it once and most people can spell a version of it.

Origin, sound and short forms
The story of Kahlani
The -lani names reached the mainland US long before Kahlani did: Leilani has been in American records for the better part of a century, and Kalani followed, both carrying the Hawaiian element lani, "sky, heaven, royalty." Kahlani arrived this century as one of several English respellings circling that sound, alongside Kehlani, each nudging the vowels toward how the name is heard rather than how Hawaiian is written. It has grown fastest in Texas, Florida and Georgia — a long way from the language it borrows from, which is how most American names travel. Its own written record is short, and still being made.
Meaningscholars disagree
Most directly read as a respelling of Hawaiian Kalani, "the sky, the heavens" — also "the royal one"
Two readings compete. One takes Kahlani as an English spelling of Hawaiian Kalani, from ka ("the") and lani ("sky, heaven, royalty"). The other treats it as a modern American coinage built on the sound of that whole -lani family, Kalani, Kehlani and Leilani together, rather than a direct borrowing. The spelling itself argues for the second: Hawaiian syllables always end in a vowel, so "Kah-" is not a shape Hawaiian words take. Either way, the -lani ending is genuinely Hawaiian.
Pronouncing Kahlani
kah-LAH-nee
Three syllables, stress in the middle. Some families say kuh-LAH-nee with a lighter first vowel; both are in use, and neither will strike anyone as wrong.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Kinsey test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kahlani's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Kinsey climbed just as high around 1998, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Kinsey's path sketches the road Kahlani is walking now.
Kahlani is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- Ends in the same -lani that Leilani and Kalani have made familiar in American records, so the sound needs no explanation.
- Comes with a ready-made short form, Lani, which stands on its own as a given name.
- Reads phonetically for most English speakers on a first attempt, even when they have never seen it written.
- Climbing rather than fading, but still uncommon enough that a child is unlikely to share it in a classroom.
- Kahlani, Kalani and Kehlani are close enough that your child will spend a lifetime spelling it out. Worth deciding early which one you want and saying it the same way every time.
- The added h does not fit Hawaiian spelling, where syllables end in vowels. Anyone who knows the language will read it as an English respelling of Kalani rather than a Hawaiian word — something to be at ease with if the Hawaiian connection matters to you.
- The meaning is not fully settled, so there is no single line to hand a curious relative — just an honest account of where the sound comes from.
- Its record is short and its wave is very recent, which means most people carrying it right now are small children. How it wears on an adult is still being written.
