Where it comes from

The story of Shanita

Two systems overlapped in the middle of the twentieth century. Spanish naming had long used the -ita ending, and American English had it available from Juanita, Anita and Rosita, which were already familiar. At the same time a set of front elements was becoming productive in African American naming — Sha-, La-, De-, Ta- — capable of attaching to almost anything. Where the two met, names like Shanita, Lanita and Danita appeared: Spanish grammar on the back, American invention on the front, and no relationship to Spanish anywhere else in the word.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The compound has no meaning. The ending genuinely does mean something in Spanish, where it makes a name smaller or dearer, but it is not attached to a Spanish word here, so it has nothing to make smaller.

Pronouncing Shanita

shuh-NEE-tuh

Three syllables with the weight in the middle. The first is reduced almost to nothing, which is why the record also carries Shaneta and Shanetta.

Fashion outlook

Shanita sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The stress in the middle gives it a lift most English names of its length do not have.
  • Nita and Shan are ready short forms, each a standing name.
  • Every sound in it is easy and the spelling follows the sound closely.
What to consider
  • Shaneta, Shanetta and Shaunita are all in the record and are confused with it constantly.
  • There is no inherited meaning; the parts have grammar and the whole does not.
  • It reads clearly as a name of the second half of the twentieth century.
