The story of Ashlee
Ashley began as a place name in several English counties, became a surname, and crossed into given-name use for boys in the nineteenth century. The move to girls happened in America in the 1980s and was total: within a decade the name was in the top five for girls and effectively gone for boys. The respellings followed the fashion, and Ashlee — the -ee ending — peaked in the late 1980s alongside Ashleigh and Ashly.
Meaning
ash-tree clearing
From the Old English æsc, 'ash tree', and leah, 'clearing' or 'woodland glade'. The leah element is the single commonest in English place names, which is why so many surname-names — Shirley, Beverley, Bradley, Hadley — share the ending.

The Gwendolyn test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Ashlee's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Gwendolyn climbed just as high around 1951, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Gwendolyn's path sketches the road Ashlee is walking now.
Ashlee sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The meaning is concrete and easy to picture, which most surname-names cannot manage.
- Ash is a short, clean, thoroughly modern short form.
- The Old English place-name history is genuine and easy to tell.
- At least four spellings were in heavy use at once, so it will be misspelled routinely.
- The name is very tightly dated to the late 1980s and 1990s.
