Where it comes from

The story of Aryel

The word appears in the Hebrew Bible in several senses, and the ambiguity is old. Isaiah 29 addresses Ariel, the city where David encamped, which is plainly Jerusalem; Ezekiel uses a similar word for the upper part of the altar where offerings were burned; and elsewhere it is a personal name and a term for a warrior. Lion of God is the straightforward reading of the letters, and the altar sense may come from a different root entirely. Shakespeare gave the name to the airy spirit in The Tempest, which is where English use of it begins, and the modern American name comes from that literary line rather than from the prophets, with a Disney film supplying most of its recent visibility.

Hebrew ari and El, lion of God

From Hebrew ari, a lion, and El, God. In Isaiah the word is used as a name for Jerusalem, and in Ezekiel it appears to name part of the altar, which has produced a second proposed derivation from a word for a hearth. Aryel is a modern spelling; the peak is 1992.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Aryel went to 8 girls in 2025, but Ariel and Ariell are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 870, which makes it the 353rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 10,564 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 1,847 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 200,908 for Aryel itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
