Aryan
Masculine · “noble”
Aryan is given to both — 8,106 boys and 748 girls since 1880. See Aryan as a girl nameSee other names given to both
Arya is a Sanskrit word meaning noble or honorable, and it was what a group of ancient peoples called themselves. Iran's name comes from it directly — the land of the Aryans — and it is an entirely ordinary boy's name across India today. It was also taken up by nineteenth-century European race theory and then by the Nazi state, and both of those things are true at once.
How old is the name Aryan?
Aryan first appears in US birth records in 1978 — 47 years ago. The typical Aryan is a kid of about 12 — this name's wave is very recent. About 8,000 people named Aryan are estimated to be alive in the US today.
When was the name Aryan most popular?
Aryan peaked in 2007, reaching #613 nationally. Today it ranks #871, 258 places below that high. See the whole 2007 chart.

The story of Aryan
European philologists in the nineteenth century, having discovered that Sanskrit, Greek and the Germanic languages were related, borrowed the Sanskrit self-description as a label for the whole family and then for an imagined race — a step that had no basis in the linguistics and enormous consequences. Nazi ideology took the word from there. Meanwhile it never stopped being an ordinary name in India, and it is that use, not the other, that has brought Aryan into American records: the name appears here from 1978 and rose steeply with Indian migration.
Meaning
noble, honorable
From the Sanskrit arya, meaning noble or worthy of respect, and used in the oldest Indian texts as a self-description. The Old Persian cognate gives the country name Iran. The word's meaning in its own languages is not in doubt; what happened to it in European hands is a separate matter and has nothing to do with the Sanskrit.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Aryan went to 275 boys in 2025, but Arian, Aaryan and Ariyan and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 8 spellings went to 654, which makes it the 434th most-given boys’ name of the year — 437 places above the chart.
About 1 boy in 2,612 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 6,211 for Aryan itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Huston test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Aryan's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Huston climbed just as high around 1906, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Huston's path sketches the road Aryan is walking now.
Aryan sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The meaning in its own languages is documented, ancient and entirely positive.
- Arya is available as a short form and is a standing name for either sex.
- Five letters, two syllables, and no sound English lacks.
- It is completely ordinary across India and Iran, where none of the European history attaches.
- In Europe and North America the word carries the weight of racial ideology, and a child with this name in an American school will meet that at some point.
- That association is a European misuse of an Indian word rather than anything in the name itself, but explaining it is a real and recurring task.
- Nearly every child given this spelling is a boy, though Arya is used for both.
