Abner comes from Hebrew, where it joins two small everyday words — a father, and a lamp — into one of the oldest names still in ordinary use. It belonged to the commander of King Saul's army in the books of Samuel, traveled into English through the Bible, and has been spoken in American English for centuries without changing shape. Two syllables, both stressed clearly, nothing to spell twice.

Where it comes from

The story of Abner

Abner is a Hebrew name, Avner, carried into Greek and Latin by the translators of the Hebrew Bible and from there into English scripture. In the books of Samuel it belongs to Abner son of Ner, cousin of King Saul and commander of his army — a substantial figure in the story of Israel's first monarchy. English-speaking Protestants began giving biblical names of this kind to their own children in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and Abner came to America in that wave, settling especially in New England and Pennsylvania. It has never stopped being used since, and it also has a real life in Spanish and Portuguese, where the spelling stays exactly the same.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Spelled the way it sounds and read correctly on sight by almost anyone, in English and in Spanish alike.
  • A continuous written record going back to the books of Samuel — few names in use have a longer one.
  • Familiar without being crowded: a child is unlikely to share it with a classmate.
  • Comes with ready-made short forms — Ab, Abe — rather than needing one invented.
What to consider
  • Abe is also the everyday short form of Abraham, so an Abner who uses it will occasionally be assumed to be an Abraham.
  • Al Capp's comic strip Li'l Abner ran for decades in American newspapers, and older readers may hear its hillbilly caricature in the name. Younger generations largely will not.
  • In the Bible, Abner's story ends in his killing by Joab — worth knowing if the family reads the passage aloud, though it does little to the name in daily use.
