In the Middle Ages the monks and farmers of Artois, in northern France, drilled wells so deep that water rose up the shaft under its own pressure, and such wells have been called artesian ever since. Artez was not built from the province; it came from Art, the short form of Arthur, and the -tez endings of its own day. But its sound recalls water rising by itself from deep underground, which is a good image for a name.
