The story of Arlando
The historical event was small: in 778 Charlemagne's rearguard was ambushed in a Pyrenean pass, probably by Basques, and a Frankish officer called Hruodland was among the dead. Three centuries later somebody turned it into eleven thousand lines of verse with Saracens instead of Basques and a hero who will not call for help because it would look like fear. The poem was enormously influential and the Italians took Roland as Orlando and kept writing about him for another five hundred years. The horn matters: Roland blows it at last, so hard that he bursts a blood vessel, and Charlemagne hears it and turns back, and it is still too late.
