Arantxa
Feminine · “you”
The tx in Arantxa is not a mistake and not a Slavic import. It is Basque, and it is that language's way of writing the sound English spells ch — so the name is said ah-RAHN-cha. Behind it is a shrine in the Basque hills, a hawthorn bush, and a sentence a shepherd is said to have spoken when he found something he did not expect in it.

The story of Arantxa
The sanctuary of Arantzazu sits above Oñati in the Basque hills and has been a pilgrimage site since the fifteenth century; the Virgin of Arantzazu is patron of Gipuzkoa. Basque naming draws heavily on Marian shrines, which is where Nekane, Miren, Itziar and Arantzazu all come from, and each of them has a shortened everyday form. Arantxa is the one for this shrine, and it became a common Basque woman's name in the twentieth century. It reached American records through Spanish-speaking families and through the visibility of a Basque tennis player who spent years at the top of the game.
Meaning
you, among the thorns
Arantxa is the familiar form of Arantzazu, the name of a Marian sanctuary in Gipuzkoa. Basque arantza is a thorn or a hawthorn, and the traditional explanation of the shrine's name is a phrase addressed to the Virgin — you, among the thorns — said by the shepherd who found her image in a thorn bush. The word for thorn is certain; the sentence is the tradition's own account.

Pronouncing Arantxa
ah-RAHN-cha
Three syllables, stress in the middle. The tx is a single sound, the ch of church; Basque uses it because its alphabet assigns other jobs to c and h. English readers almost always try to say the t and the x separately, which produces something the name has never been.

The Athina test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Arantxa's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Athina climbed just as high around 1989, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Athina's path sketches the road Arantxa is walking now.
Arantxa sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It is a real Basque name with a documented shrine and a memorable story behind it.
- Aran works as a short form and is easy for any English speaker.
- It is completely distinctive — a child will not meet another.
- The meaning is vivid and concrete: a thorn bush and a sentence.
- The tx defeats English readers on sight, and correcting it is required in every new room.
- Aránzazu and Arantza are both used in Spanish, so relatives may write it differently.
- It carries a strong regional identity, which is a fact to weigh rather than a fault.
