Apollonia belongs to Apollo, and to a woman who died in Alexandria in the third century for refusing to renounce her faith. Her attackers broke her teeth, which is why she has been the patron of dentists and of anyone in pain from a tooth ever since, and why medieval Europe knew her name so well.

Where it comes from

The story of Apollonia

Greek names built on the gods were ordinary in the ancient world, and Apollonios and Apollonia were among the commonest of them, worn by mathematicians, cities and thousands of people whose names survive only on stone. Christianity kept this one because of the Alexandrian martyr, whose feast was widely kept in medieval Europe and whose image, holding a tooth in a pair of pincers, appears in churches across Germany, Italy and Spain. The name stayed in Catholic use in Germany, Poland and Italy and came to the United States with families from all three.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The name means of Apollo, and Apollo's own name has no accepted etymology. Greek writers linked it to apollymi, to destroy, but that is folk etymology; scholars have proposed Anatolian and pre-Greek sources without agreement. So the name points clearly at a god whose name nobody can explain.

Apollonia sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1985, with 67 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Apollonia went to 28 girls in 2025, but Apolonia is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 43, which makes it the 917th most-given girls’ name of the year — 3,841 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 37,378 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 57,402 for Apollonia itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It carries a documented saint with an unusually vivid story attached.
  • It offers short forms of very different registers, from Pola to Nia.
  • It is long and unmistakably classical, which very few names in current use are.
What to consider
  • Five syllables is a great deal of name for a form, a coach or a substitute teacher.
  • Apolonia with one l is standard in Polish and Spanish, so spellings differ across one family.
  • Its patronage is dental, which is charming to some families and an odd fact to explain to others.
