Anum
Feminine · “blessings”

The story of Anum
Urdu grew as a court and camp language in northern India and its vocabulary shows it: Persian supplied the literary register, Arabic the religious one, and the Indic base supplied everything else. Names followed the same pattern, so a family may carry an Arabic name, a Persian one and a Sanskrit one across three siblings without anyone regarding that as unusual. There is a coincidence worth mentioning and dismissing in the same breath. Anum is also, in Akkadian, the name of the sky god — An in Sumerian, the head of the oldest pantheon anyone has written down, and quite possibly the oldest divine name in the human record. It has nothing to do with the Pakistani name. It is simply the same four letters, four thousand years earlier.

blessings, favors
Usually connected with Arabic anam or the root behind niama, a blessing or favor bestowed. The connection is standard in Urdu name books but not firmly established in Arabic lexicography, and the name is much commoner in Pakistan than in Arabic-speaking countries, which suggests a local formation.
Pronouncing Anum
AH-num
Two syllables, stress on the first, with both vowels short and open. Americans often say uh-NUM, moving the weight to the end, which is understood but is not the Urdu shape.

The Darrelyn test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Anum's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Darrelyn climbed just as high around 1950, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Darrelyn's path sketches the road Anum is walking now.
Anum sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
