Where it comes from

The story of Antony

Mark Antony ruled a third of the Roman world and lost it at Actium; Shakespeare spells him Antony. Saint Antony of Egypt founded Christian monasticism in the desert around 300. English used Antony for centuries before the h crept in. The spelling remains standard in Britain, and it appears in American records in current use.

Meaningnot established

Not established

From the Roman family name Antonius, of genuinely unrecovered origin — probably Etruscan. The h was added in the sixteenth century by scholars who linked it to the Greek anthos, 'flower', which is a false etymology. Antony without the h is the historically correct English form.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Antony went to 104 boys in 2025, but Antoni is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 165, which makes it the 763rd most-given boys’ name of the year — 858 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 10,352 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 16,424 for Antony itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is the historically correct English spelling, without the false Greek h.
  • A Roman triumvir and the founder of monasticism both carry it.
  • Tony is available as a completely ordinary short form.
What to consider
  • Anthony is far commoner in America and will be assumed.
  • The Roman family name's own meaning is genuinely unrecovered.
  • It will be corrected to Anthony by other people.
