The story of Antoni
Antonius was an Etruscan-derived Roman gens name whose meaning was already lost in antiquity, and the English spelling gained an h from a false Greek etymology. Antoni Gaudí built the Sagrada Família. It is standard in Polish and Catalan and appears in American records in current use.

Not established
From the Roman family name Antonius, of unrecovered and probably Etruscan origin. The h in English Anthony was added by scholars who wrongly linked it to the Greek anthos, 'flower'. The name is documented; its meaning is not.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Toan test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Antoni's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Toan climbed just as high around 1983, and its whole arc is on record.
