Our story of Annia
Ours, offered as ours. The Annii were a real Roman family — Marcus Aurelius was born Marcus Annius Verus — and their name has no explanation, like a great many Roman gentilicia. Quite separately, Hebrew Hannah reached Europe as Anna and Latin naming extended it freely. Annia sits between an unexplained Roman family and a very well documented Hebrew word, and there is no way to tell from the letters which a given family meant.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The Roman gens name Annia has no established derivation. Separately, Anna descends from Hebrew Hannah, grace or favor, and Annia can be read as its Latinate extension. The two lines are unrelated and both are plausible.

About 1 girl in 722 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 41,212 for Annia itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
