Angelique is the French dress worn by an old Latin word: angelicus, "angelic," itself borrowed from the Greek angelos, a messenger. It has been on English-language records for over a century, and it still moves at its own pace — three syllables that end on that clean, closed -eek, a sound English gives to very few names.

The story of Angelique
The root is the Greek angelos, "messenger," which passed into Church Latin as angelus and gave the adjective angelicus. Italian turned that into Angelica — the name Ariosto gave the princess at the center of Orlando Furioso in the early sixteenth century — and French reshaped it as Angélique, the form Molière used for the daughter in Le Malade imaginaire in 1673. It crossed into American use with French-speaking families and has been on the records here ever since, with the accent generally left behind at the border. The mid-twentieth-century Angélique novels of Anne Golon, and the French films made from them, kept the name lively on both sides of the Atlantic.

Pronouncing Angelique
an-juh-LEEK
Stress falls on the last syllable. The French pronunciation softens the g to a zh sound — ahn-zhay-LEEK — and both are heard in American families, so it is worth deciding early which one you will offer when people ask.

The Dona test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Angelique's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Dona climbed just as high around 1933, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Dona's path sketches the road Angelique is walking now.

The trade-off
- Angie is a ready-made short form with a long independent life of its own, so the name comes with a casual version already built in.
- Works across French, Dutch, and English without respelling, and has close cousins in Italian, Spanish and German.
- The line back through Angélique, Angelica and Latin angelicus is unbroken and well documented.
- Familiar enough to be recognized on sight, while a child is unlikely to share it with a classmate.
- The accent in the French Angélique almost always disappears in American use. If you want to keep it, expect to restore it yourself on forms, screens and school lists.
- Two pronunciations circulate — the anglicized an-juh-LEEK and the French ahn-zhay-LEEK. Neither is wrong, but your child will spend some time correcting people toward whichever you choose.
- It sits close to Angelica, Angelina and Angela, and gets written as one of those by people going from sound alone.
- It is strongly represented among adults now in their thirties and older, so it may read as a grown woman's name before it reads as a baby's — that tends to even out as the child grows into it.
